Basketball Positions

Center

The centre is likely to be the tallest player on the court. The center can be a big scorer, but also needs to be a strong rebounder and shot blocker. Their primary jobs are to get rebounds and score points when close the basket. Some centers are very dominant at scoring from in close while many others only score a handful of points per game. He must be an aggressive rebounder and lead the way in blocked shots. He is king of the paint.

Usually the biggest member of the team. The center should keep the ball moving and a strong presence. Able to attack the ball when loose. Joins in at collecting rebounds. Good pace on the court. Must be able to defend under the post. Has a greater physical presence. Always put the man who is tallest or the best defender at center.

Desired qualities of a Center:

  • Physical player
  • Instinctive knowledge of the game
  • Ready to score and create under the post
  • Competes with the opposition at both ends
  • Great shooter upto medium range
  • Won’t dribble too often
  • Great ball handler
  • Constant threat to opponents
  • Excellent passer
  • Possess speed and quickness of foot
  • Can play defense anywhere
  • Capable of playing hard-nosed defense
  • Must be able to read defenses

Will normally be the big player, however will always be good quality defender. The best teams will have a great player at center. Dominates territory. Is a good in defense and holds a good position and rebound skills to offense.
